Acne Scar Treatment

The condition

Acne scars may be sunken, rolling, deep, boxcar-shaped or raised. Post-acne colour marks are different from true scars.

Skinfinity treatment

We identify your scar type and control active acne before considering microneedling, microneedling radiofrequency (MNRF), laser, peels, subcision or fillers.

What is the condition?

Acne scars are lasting changes left after acne inflammation heals.

Ice-pick scars are narrow and deep; boxcar scars are wider depressions with clearer edges; and rolling scars look wavy because of bands of scar tissue beneath the skin. Less often, acne causes raised scars called hypertrophic scars or keloids.

Red, brown or lighter post-acne marks are colour changes rather than true scars, and they may fade slowly.

Picking or squeezing acne can increase scarring1.

How Skinfinity treats this concern

We first map your scar type and depth, your skin tone, any active acne, previous treatments and your personal goal.

Active acne is usually managed before scar procedures, so that new inflammation does not create new scars.

Depending on the assessment, your plan may include microneedling, MNRF, laser or RF resurfacing, chemical peels, subcision, fillers or a minor scar procedure. Subcision means releasing the scar bands beneath some rolling scars.

We may use a microneedling handpiece, an MNRF device or a laser platform when appropriate, and the exact equipment and combination are confirmed with you before treatment.

Our approach is to match the method to your scar pattern, not to promise one universal solution.

What we confirm with you before treatment

  1. The exact equipment to be used (microneedling handpiece, MNRF device or laser platform)
  2. The combination of treatments in your plan

What outcome can you expect?

The realistic aim is to make scars less noticeable and to improve uneven texture or colour.

Some treatments encourage new collagen, a natural protein that supports skin structure, so improvement develops gradually while the skin heals.

Several visits or combined treatments may be needed.

Treatment cannot reliably erase every scar or guarantee smooth, perfect or lasting skin. Raised scars can return, and some improvements are temporary.

Aftercare and long-term support

  1. Follow your clinician's written plan.
  2. Keep treated skin clean and comfortably moisturised, or protected with the advised ointment, and do not pick, rub or scratch it.
  3. Avoid tanning and protect the area from sunlight; after healing, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.
  4. Use makeup, and restart acids, retinoids or other active products, only when advised.
  5. Continue acne prevention as directed, because new breakouts can cause new scars.
  6. Seek prompt review for severe or worsening burning, itching, swelling, pain, blistering or any other concern.

Suitability, limitations and safety

A clinician should identify the scar type before treatment and control active acne when appropriate.

Tell us about keloids or raised scars, darker marks after injury, current acne medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, previous procedures and cold sores.

Improvement may need more than one method or visit, and some scars, including raised scars, can return.

Possible reactions include redness, swelling, pigment change, infection, burns or scarring, depending on the procedure.
